Not His Fault, Never His Fault
He could've been sleeping, but he wasn't sure. Maybe he was close to sleep, or maybe not, but all of it sounded and felt too real to just be a dream. A familiar, female voice whispered his name in his ear, but his eyes felt too heavy to open. Maybe he'd been knocked out? Was he just in a fight? He wasn't sure. No...wait. No, he wasn't just in a fight. He'd just finished killing a demon and exacting the revenge he had longed for for the past five years. Maybe all that exhaustion finally caught up with him, but something just seemed off. This just didn't seem like a vision or any normal dream either.
"Sam," her voice gentle and warm spoke a bit louder this time to capture his attention.
He felt soft fingertips brush back the hair splayed across his forehead and tuck some of the loose strands behind his ear, and his blue-green eyes slowly fluttered open. There was somebody leaning over him, but she was too blurred out to see. He rapidly blinked his eyes, urging the fogginess from them, as

the summer heat lays limp in the city’s lap,
breathing long oppressive breaths.
it does not even lift its lolling head
to bark out hoarse indignancy
when a strange man brings the mail.
there might be heavy rain today,
brought by some swollen, murmuring cloud.
the world will whirl and howl,
then settle down,
to die a little more.
o, quickly, love,
press your back against the wall in fear
as the universe spreads her arms and
shuts her eyes
and starts to summon the end of all things.
come with me
to the place of windows full of speechless afternoon
hot windy whispers of half-formed solutions and resolutions,
sweltering sunlit meadows we’ll wander and then forget.
o quickly, love,
let’s to the season of forgetting
and unwind all of our harshest memories
and fill the universe’s mouth
with mute cotton.
